This morning we were privileged to welcome Laura Hudson, who shared on the impact and success of the Rotary Four-Way-Test program at Sparks Elementary School, where she serves as Student Counselor.

As Laura puts it, the Four-Way-Test is the measuring stick of ethics used worldwide by Rotary Clubs. The Four-Way-Test is four simple questions that individuals need to ask themselves of the things they think, say and do:

Is it the TRUTH?

Is it FAIR to all concerned?

Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?

Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

Laura is passionate about this program, its heritage, and its effectiveness. One can hardly doubt that through her hard work in implementing the program, the school – not to mention the Sparks community and the world-at-large – is better for it.

Thanks to Scott for his eye-opening presentation!

We’ve moved!! In case you hadn’t heard, we’re now meeting at the Gourmet Girls in Owings Mills. The “Girls” performed flawlessly at our first meeting there this morning, serving us fresh fruit, coffee, juices and a full hot breakfast made to order. I think it’s safe to say we’ve found ourselves a new home for the long run.

Our guest speaker this morning was Laurie Duhan of BGE, who spoke to our club about the benefits of taking advantage of choices of electric and gas suppliers. While we can control very little with regard to our electric bills, we can control who we get our electric and gas supply from. Laurie, an Owings Mills resident, also passed out a plethora of information about ways to save on our electricity. She pointed out that a Playstation alone can cost hundreds of dollars per year to run!

Many thanks to Ed Underriner for continuing to book quality guest speakers like Laurie for the benefit of our club members and guests.

in this month’s Rotarian magazine that I think was a fantastic look into “Why Rotary?” It was an interview with Bill Gates discussing his reasons for donating more than a third of a billion dollars to Rotary’s efforts to eradicating Polio.

When asked in this interview why he gave the money to Rotary as opposed to the other world health partners in the polio fight, like the World Health Organization, this was part of his answer:

“Giving directly to Rotary is ideal because they’re just dedicated to the polio fight and not subject to the same complexities as a UN organization. It may be that Rotary, in turn, will grant [funds] through UNICEF, or directly to an NGO [nongovernmental organization] in one of the four countries where polio still exists, or to the endemic countries themselves. Rotary might even write a check to a vaccine manufacturer.”

That first sentence is quite telling of what Rotary is. It’s not a bureaucracy. It’s an organization truly committed to local and worldwide service without all the red tape. Join Rotary. It was good enough for Bill.

If you haven’t read the full article, I recommend you take a few minutes now: http://www.rotary.org/en/MediaAndNews/TheRotarian/Pages/therotarianconversationgates.aspx
